New Providence residents who haven't yet filed for state property tax relief can get free, hands-on help from state tax officials next month.
Assemblyman Andrew Macurdy and the New Jersey Division of Taxation will host a walk-in assistance session on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the DeCorso Community Center, 15 East Fourth St., New Providence.
Staff from the Division of Taxation will help attendees complete the PAS-1 form, the single combined application now used for all three of New Jersey's property tax relief programs: ANCHOR, Senior Freeze and Stay NJ.
"We've partnered with the Division of Taxation to bring PAS-1 filing events to LD-21," Macurdy, a New Providence resident who represents the 21st Legislative District, said on X on Aug. 24. "Residents can receive direct assistance from Taxation staff with 2025 ANCHOR, Senior Freeze, and Stay NJ programs."
The deadline to file for 2025 property tax relief is Nov. 2. The state mailed ANCHOR Benefit Confirmation Letters to qualifying taxpayers on Aug. 10; residents who did not receive a letter can still file on their own or get help at the Sept. 24 event.
Who qualifies
The three programs cover different groups:
- ANCHOR: Homeowners with gross income up to $250,000 who owned and occupied a home as of Oct. 1, 2025. Renters with income up to $150,000 also qualify.
- Senior Freeze: Homeowners born in 1960 or earlier with income no more than $172,475 in 2025.
- Stay NJ: Homeowners 65 or older with income up to $200,000. The maximum benefit is $6,500 for those earning $100,000 or less.
ANCHOR payments are scheduled to begin Sept. 15 and will continue on a rolling basis, according to the Division of Taxation. The state already began mailing Senior Freeze checks in mid-July, sending roughly $220 million to about 188,000 residents who filed early, Patch reported.
How to attend
The Sept. 24 session is free. The Borough of New Providence posted the event on its website. No registration requirement was listed in the announcement; residents with questions can contact Macurdy's district office at 86 Summit Ave., Suite 302, Summit, or call the Division of Taxation's Property Tax Relief Hotline at 1-888-238-1233.
Residents who cannot attend can file online at propertytaxreliefapp.nj.gov. The online application requires identity verification through ID.me.
