New Providence junior Aaron Hamlin scored both goals in a double-overtime road win at Oratory Prep. His two-goal, one-assist week earned him Union County Conference Boys Soccer Player of the Week honors for Sept. 29.
Hamlin's week started Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Linden, where he recorded an assist in the Pioneers' 2-1 league win. Two days later at Oratory Prep, he put in both goals as New Providence pulled out a 2-1 victory that needed two extra periods to decide.
The back-to-back wins snapped a losing stretch and gave the Pioneers their first winning streak of the season, lifting their record to 2-5 at the time. Oratory's loss was its 11th straight at home, a skid dating to last season, according to MaxPreps.
The weekly honor, announced by NJ.com, covers games played Sept. 21 through Sept. 26 across the conference.
Hamlin's two-win week comes during a rebuilding year for New Providence. The Pioneers graduated 17 seniors before this season, including their top scorers. Coach Chris Calveley said before the season, according to a Patch preseason report, that the team would spread scoring responsibilities among returning captains and younger players.
The momentum was short-lived. New Providence fell 3-2 to Plainfield on Tuesday, Sept. 29, dropping to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in league play, fifth in the conference standings.
The Pioneers host Roselle Park on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. They welcome Summit on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m.
