Summit firefighters knocked down a two-alarm fire at an unoccupied two-story commercial building on Broad Street on Saturday, Oct. 24.

No one was inside the building, and no injuries were reported.

The Summit Fire Department was called at about 12:36 p.m. for a report of smoke inside the building, according to Patch, citing the city. Crews arrived three minutes later, at 12:39 p.m., and found smoke coming from the structure.

A second alarm brought additional Summit Fire Department personnel to the scene. Firefighters entered the building and worked to extinguish the fire, which was declared under control at about 1:10 p.m.

The response drew mutual aid from fire departments in Millburn, Springfield, Union and Westfield, along with the Summit Police Department and the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad. The Mountainside and Berkeley Heights fire departments provided station coverage for Summit through Union County Mutual Aid.

The Broad Street fire is the second two-alarm response for the Summit Fire Department since August. On Aug. 20, crews responded to a possible lightning strike at a multi-apartment home on Kent Place Boulevard, according to the city. In that incident, nine residents, three cats and one dog were evacuated, and the attic fire was brought under control at about 7:16 p.m. No injuries were reported then either.

Fire Chief Brian Harnois said after the August fire that all on-duty personnel had already been responding to storm-related calls when the Kent Place Boulevard report came in. Both incidents drew mutual aid from Millburn and Springfield.

The cause of the Broad Street fire remains under investigation by the Union County Fire Investigation Task Force. Residents who have information about the fire can contact the Summit Fire Department or the Summit Police Department.
