Academy Street in New Providence switched to one-way southbound traffic for its entire length on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The change stems from construction of the borough's new police headquarters. The New Providence Police Department is operating from a temporary location at 1 Academy Street while the new building goes up. The borough said in a traffic alert posted Monday, Aug. 31, that the one-way pattern will provide safer traffic flow around that temporary facility.

New signage was already posted along Academy Street as of Aug. 31, according to TAPinto New Providence.

The Mayor and Council formally adopted the change through Ordinance 2026-08, which amends Chapter 257 of the borough code governing vehicles and traffic. The ordinance also establishes police-only parking on Academy Street, according to an Aug. 11 council meeting summary.

The one-way restriction will remain in place for the duration of the police building construction. No projected completion date has been announced.

The borough is asking drivers to allow extra time while adjusting to the new pattern and to follow posted signage and any directions from traffic control officers. The borough also asked for residents' patience during construction of the new police building.
