Berkeley Heights police are stepping up patrols for impaired drivers starting Wednesday, Aug. 12, as part of a statewide crackdown that runs through Labor Day.
The Berkeley Heights Police Department, led by Chief Frank Mea, announced it is joining law enforcement agencies across New Jersey in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, a nationally coordinated enforcement effort that targets the weeks leading up to Labor Day. The campaign ends Sept. 7.
Drivers in Berkeley Heights may encounter increased patrols and potential sobriety checkpoints on local roads through the campaign window.
The department posted the announcement on the township's official X account at 3:42 p.m. Wednesday, urging residents who plan to drink to designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service or arrange a safe ride home beforehand.
The campaign is not new to the Summit area. The Summit Police Department ran the same program during the 2024 holiday season.
The BHPD has not specified checkpoint locations, patrol hours or how many additional officers will be deployed during the enforcement window.
