Summit residents have until Tuesday, Oct. 13, to register for the Nov. 3 General Election. The city's Clerk's Office at 512 Springfield Ave. will stay open until 9 p.m. that day for registration.
The city published a voter guide on Tuesday, Sept. 22, pulling together deadlines, vote-by-mail details and polling locations from the Union County Clerk's Office. Residents can check their registration status on the state's voter registration website.
Vote by mail
Voters who want a mail ballot must apply by mail no later than Tuesday, Oct. 27. Those who prefer to apply in person can do so at the County Clerk offices in Elizabeth or Westfield through Monday, Nov. 2, at 3 p.m.
Completed ballots can go into the secure drop box at the Summit Community Center, 100 Morris Ave.
That location is new. The Union County Board of Elections moved Summit's drop box to the community center before this election cycle. The box is available around the clock, monitored by camera and ADA accessible. It will remain open through the close of polls at 8 p.m. on Nov. 3.
Ballots can also be returned by mail or delivered in person to the Union County Board of Elections office.
The Union County Clerk's Office said in a Sept. 10 statement that ballots would be processed under New Jersey state law despite ongoing federal litigation. The opt-out deadline for automatic vote-by-mail enrollment passed on Sept. 15. Voters who previously opted in to automatic ballots and want to stop receiving them must notify the County Clerk's Office in writing.
Early voting and Election Day
Early in-person voting runs Saturday, Oct. 24, through Sunday, Nov. 1, at locations throughout Union County. Specific early voting sites had not been listed in the city's guide as of Sept. 22; the Union County Board of Elections website will carry the full list.
On Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Ward-by-ward polling places are:

- District 1: Summit Community Center, Investor's Bank Gym, 100 Morris Ave.
- Districts 2, 11, 12: Summit High School Auxiliary Gym, 125 Kent Place Blvd.
- Districts 3, 4, 5, 6: Lincoln Hubbard School gym, 52 Woodland Ave.
- Districts 7, 8, 9, 10: Washington School gym, 507 Morris Ave.

- Districts 1, 2, 3: Summit Community Center, Investor's Bank Gym, 100 Morris Ave.
- Districts 4, 6, 7: Summit Middle School, 272 Morris Ave. (gym entrance on Summit Ave.; accessible entrance on Oakland Place)
- Districts 5, 10: Brayton Elementary School Art Room, 89 Tulip St. (entrance on Myrtle Ave.)
- District 8: Vito A. Gallo Senior Building, Community Room, 12 Chestnut Ave. (Broad St. entrance)
