A stranger who was let into a Berkeley Heights home to use the bathroom turned off the lights and tried to hide from the residents and responding officers, police said.

The Berkeley Heights Police Department responded to the home Saturday, Sept. 5, at about 9:21 p.m. after a resident reported allowing an unknown man inside, according to a department press release on Facebook.

Once inside, the man went into the bathroom, switched off the lights and attempted to conceal himself from both the homeowner and police, Patch reported. Officers located the man and said they took appropriate action to resolve the situation safely.

Police did not identify the man, did not say whether he was arrested or charged and did not release a specific address or neighborhood.

The department used the incident to issue a public safety warning on its Facebook page, urging residents not to allow anyone they do not know into their homes. If a stranger approaches and asks for help, police advised keeping doors locked and calling the department or 911 in an emergency.
