Gina's Tennis World, a Berkeley Heights tennis club that has operated on Springfield Avenue since 1983, will open its third court with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 12.

Berkeley Heights Mayor Angie Devanney will cut the ribbon at 11 a.m. at 649 Springfield Ave. The free event runs until 3 p.m., according to a Patch community calendar listing posted by owner Gina Genovese.

The new court also comes with a new street-facing sign on Springfield Avenue. Genovese said she hopes the sign will put the longtime club on the map for residents who never knew it was there.

"After being in business for 43 years in Berkeley Heights, I am so excited to have the opportunity to have more kids and adults learning to love the game of tennis," Genovese said in the listing. "I still enjoy teaching even more than I did in 1983."

Genovese founded the club after leaving the women's professional tennis tour, according to the listing. She has taught players ages 5 to 80 at every skill level and now works alongside fellow instructors Coach Wendy and Phil Rankine, who have each been with the club for more than two decades. She is now teaching a second generation of students.

The club does not charge membership fees, according to its website. Court reservations for each season are taken in February and March, with deposits of $200 per hour. Phil Rankine is listed as an instructor on the site.

During the grand opening, guests can try HEAD demo rackets against a ball machine and hit targets for prizes from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Life-sized cutouts of tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will be available for photos throughout the event. A raffle will give one winner the chance to take a cutout home.
