Eight Governor Livingston High School seniors earned Commended Student recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program, Berkeley Heights Public Schools announced Oct. 20.

The students are Howard Acheson, Luke Esmerado, Emerson Gorker, Jackson Hyman, Elizabeth Kavanagh, Caroline O'Rourke, John Patti and Pushan Raghavendra, according to Union County Life, which reported the names from the district's announcement.

The district's announcement called the recognition an outstanding achievement and congratulated all eight students.

The Commended designation falls within the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. More than 1.2 million juniors nationwide entered the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, or PSAT/NMSQT, in fall 2025, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Semifinalists, a separate and higher tier, scored in the top 1% of those test-takers.

In New Jersey, 394 high school seniors earned semifinalist status in the 2027 program, NJ.com reported. Those students can compete for roughly 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $24 million, according to the NMSC.

The Berkeley Heights district's announcement did not detail what the Commended designation means for the eight students' next steps. It also did not include individual quotes or additional context about the students' achievements.
