David Moore won a seat on the Berkeley Heights Board of Education on Nov. 3, collecting 4,126 votes in a race where he was the only candidate to file a petition.

Moore took 85.9% of the vote, with write-in candidates accounting for the remaining 677 votes, or 14.1%, according to unofficial results first reported by Hoodline, citing TAPinto Berkeley Heights.

Two seats were on the ballot for three-year terms, according to the Union County Clerk's candidate list. Moore was the only person to file a nominating petition. The outcome of the second seat remains unclear because election-night results did not break down write-in votes by candidate name.

All results posted by the Union County Clerk's office are unofficial. Ballots postmarked by Nov. 3 can be accepted through Nov. 9, according to NJ.com, and provisional ballots are not counted until after all mail-in ballots are tallied.

New Providence race still awaiting totals

In New Providence, two candidates ran for two open Board of Education seats: Kristen Empson Hayden and Amanda Marano. Empson Hayden ran under the slogan "Innovation. Action. Achievement."

Vote totals for the New Providence school board race had not been posted as of election night. The borough directed residents to the Union County results page to follow tallies as they come in.

Both races drew attention heading into the election. A pre-election NJ21st roundtable published Nov. 1 discussed few contested school board races in the area, school funding pressures and teachers' contract negotiations in Berkeley Heights.

Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi's office posted its unofficial periodic report at 10:27 p.m. on election night. Updated results will be available at unioncountyvotes.com as additional ballots are counted.
