Older adults in New Providence can sign up for a free 24-week program that combines strength exercises with bone-health education.

The Westfield Regional Health Department is launching Project Healthy Bones at New Providence Presbyterian Church, 1307 Springfield Ave., starting Tuesday, Oct. 13. Sessions run from 1 to 2:30 p.m. once a week.

The program targets the body's larger muscle groups to build strength, balance and flexibility, according to the borough's announcement. An educational component covers osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment, medications, nutrition, falls prevention, safe movement and lifestyle factors tied to bone health.

Osteoporosis thins and weakens bones, making fractures more likely. The program is open to older women and men who have the condition or are at risk for it.

State-run program, local sessions

The New Jersey Division of Aging Services administers Project Healthy Bones across the state. Women make up the majority of participants statewide, but the number of men is growing, the division reports.

One participant featured on the state's program page, identified as Mr. Wong, said he saw significant improvement in his health after a year in the program. He did not take medication or make other major lifestyle changes. Wong and his wife later trained as peer leaders, and he said on the state program page that the program is for everyone, not just women.

The Westfield Regional Health Department, part of Union County Government, has run the program at multiple sites in the region. A previous session launched at Rexford Tucker Apartments in Madison in September 2024.
