Summit's rescheduled Fourth of July fireworks and a full evening of activities with local first responders will take over Soldiers Memorial Field on Tuesday, Aug. 4, bringing road closures and facility shutdowns that residents should plan around.

The city's National Night Out celebration runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 5 Myrtle Ave., according to the City of Summit's event listing. The Summit Police Department, Summit Fire Department, Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad, and the Department of Public Works will all participate, alongside federal, state, and county law enforcement agencies.

Closures start early

The walking track, playground, tennis courts, and lower fields at Memorial Field will shut down at 1 p.m. on Aug. 4 so crews can set up the fireworks display. The Ashland Road parking lot next to the tennis courts will be closed all day.

Roads adjacent to the field close to vehicle traffic at 5 p.m.

Residents who need accessible parking can use the intersection of Watchung Place and Tulip Street.

Schedule of events

Gates open at 6 p.m. with food trucks, bounce houses, live music on the main stage, and free hot dogs from the Summit PAL food cart. The Blessing of the Badges ceremony begins at 7 p.m., followed by The Divas performing at 7:15 p.m.

A dunk tank featuring Summit police officers and firefighters will raise money for a local family in need. The city has not publicly named the family.

The fireworks display, sponsored by Bristol Myers Squibb, is scheduled for approximately 8:45 p.m. The show was originally planned for Saturday, July 4, but city officials canceled it after storms downed trees and power lines across Union County on the night of Friday, July 3, leaving residents without electricity.
