Summit field hockey beats Old Bridge 5-2 in season opener

Summit High School's field hockey team opened the 2026 season with a 5-2 home win over Old Bridge on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The Hilltoppers return eight starters from a squad that went 17-7 last year before falling to Chatham 2-1 in the NJSIAA North Jersey Group 3 semifinals. Head coach Jennifer Schwarzenbek, now in her 19th season leading the program, carries a career record of 219-141-13 at Summit.

Schwarzenbek told NJ.com she expects senior forwards Hayley Harrington-Sutton and Victoria Viscovich to anchor the attack. Junior midfielder Florence Chapman returns after posting 20 goals and 16 assists last season, including seven multi-goal games. NJ.com named Chapman among its Essex/Union Conference midfielders to watch for 2026.

Freshman midfielder Reese Lysiak is projected to start in the team's 3-4-4 formation. Junior Aspen Ruschmeier returns as the starting goalkeeper.

Summit competes in the Essex/Union Conference and NJSIAA North Group 2 this fall.

A new state law signed by Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Sept. 1 bars landlords and HOAs from prohibiting plug-in solar panels up to 1,200 watts, a change that affects Summit's roughly 2,644 renter-occupied housing units when the law takes effect March 1, 2027.
