A masked suspect stole a gray 2024 BMW M2 from an unlocked driveway on Hillcrest Avenue early Sunday, Oct. 4. Summit police are asking residents for help identifying him.

Surveillance footage captured the theft, which began around 12:42 a.m., according to the Summit Police Department. A white SUV with Maryland plate 5GP8628, possibly a BMW, slowly passed the home before backing toward the driveway.

A man exited the SUV's rear passenger-side door and walked to the unlocked driver's side of the M2. He spent about 10 seconds inside the car, then returned to the SUV.

The SUV headed east on Hillcrest Avenue toward Fernwood Road and made at least one U-turn outside the camera's view. It returned moments later.

On the second trip, the suspect entered the BMW again, appeared to tamper with the dashboard display, started the car and drove off. Both vehicles left Summit shortly after, according to the department.

The SUV had not been reported stolen when police checked.

Police described the suspect as male, wearing a black Nike hoodie, black sweatpants, a black face mask, black-and-green gloves and neon Nike Air Max 95 sneakers.

A homeowner reported the car missing at about 8:43 a.m. Sunday. No arrest has been made, and the investigation remains open.

The theft follows another vehicle theft in Summit on Sept. 23, when a 2019 Infiniti Q60 was stolen from a business on Morris Avenue, according to the department's website. In that case, suspects arrived in a silver or gray Infiniti Q50 with a New Jersey plate that did not match an Infiniti.

In January, Summit police noted a regional increase in motor vehicle thefts, burglaries to vehicles and attempted break-ins, with suspects in several incidents entering homes to search for key fobs.

The department reminded residents to lock all vehicle and residence doors and report suspicious activity. Summit also operates a Citizen Eye program, a voluntary registry of private surveillance cameras that gives detectives access to footage in areas where crimes occur.
