Summit residents who missed the Fourth of July fireworks will get their show Tuesday, Aug. 4, when the city's rescheduled display lights up Soldiers Memorial Field around 8:45 p.m. during the annual National Night Out celebration.

The free event runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 5 Myrtle Ave. and brings together the Summit Police Department, Summit Fire Department, Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad, and federal, state, and county law enforcement agencies for an evening of public safety demonstrations, live music, and food.

The original Independence Day celebration was canceled on Saturday, July 4, after storms the night before downed trees and power lines across Union County, causing widespread outages. City officials announced that morning that the festivities would not move forward. The fireworks have since been rescheduled to National Night Out, with Bristol Myers Squibb sponsoring the display.

What to expect

Food trucks, bounce houses, and amusements open at 6 p.m., along with a musical performance on the main stage. The Summit PAL food cart will serve free hot dogs. A Blessing of the Badges ceremony begins at 7 p.m., followed by The Divas in concert at 7:15 p.m.

A dunk tank featuring Summit police officers and firefighters will raise money for a local family in need.

Road closures and parking

Residents should plan ahead. The walking track, playground, tennis courts, and lower fields at Memorial Field close at 1 p.m. to prepare for the fireworks. Roads adjacent to the field close to vehicle traffic at 5 p.m. The Ashland Road parking lot next to the Memorial Field tennis courts will be closed all day on Aug. 4.

Accessible parking will be available at the intersection of Watchung Place and Tulip Street.
