Berkeley Heights families expecting bus route information in the coming days have a new person overseeing how their kids get to and from school.

The district announced Tuesday, Aug. 18, that Gregory Cohen will serve as the new transportation supervisor for Berkeley Heights Public Schools, according to the district's official social media account.

Cohen takes over the role less than three weeks before the 2026-27 school year begins on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Cohen brings more than 30 years of management experience to the position, with a stated focus on student safety, according to TAPinto Berkeley Heights. The district did not name his previous employer or prior role in the accessible portions of its announcement.

The timing matters for families.

The transportation department is in the middle of distributing bus route and pass assignments for the new school year. As we reported Aug. 11, the district told families that route and pass information would arrive by email in late August. Families were also directed to check the district website and the PowerSchool portal for their assignments.

Whether Cohen is already managing that rollout or will start after routes go out is unclear. The district's full announcement page, linked from its Aug. 18 social media post, was not publicly accessible as of Wednesday, Aug. 19. That means details about Cohen's exact start date, his background and any comments from the superintendent remain unavailable.

The transportation supervisor role in Berkeley Heights oversees bus routing, coordinates with contracted carriers and handles day-to-day logistics that affect every family relying on district busing. It is not clear whether Cohen replaces a departing supervisor or fills a vacancy that had been open.

Families should monitor the district website and PowerSchool portal for bus route updates ahead of the Sept. 8 start of school.
