New Providence canceled its Freecycle event scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, because of a forecast for bad weather. The next Freecycle won't happen until spring 2027, with no fall replacement planned.
The borough announced the cancellation Thursday, Sept. 24, on its official civic alert page. The borough did not name a spokesperson in the announcement.
The event had been set to run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Community Pool parking lot on Springfield Avenue, according to a Patch preview published Sept. 12. Residents could donate or pick up free, gently used household items such as toys, sports gear and home goods. The program encourages neighbors to pass along usable items instead of throwing them away.
For residents who still want to donate household items, the borough listed several alternatives:
- Junior League Thrift Shop, 37 Deforest Ave. in Summit
- Goodwill, 649 Morris Turnpike in Springfield
- Green Drop, 831 S. Springfield Ave. in Springfield
- My Unique, 1549 US-22 in Watchung
- Vietnam Veterans of America pick-up service at www.pickupplease.org
Clothing and shoes can go to the Municipal Alliance Clothing Drop box at 10 Academy St. in New Providence. That box accepts donations on an ongoing basis.
Residents with clothing to donate can also bring it to the NPHS Athletic Booster Club Clothing Drive on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon at New Providence High School.
Questions about the Freecycle program can be directed to the New Providence Recreation Department.
The spring 2027 Freecycle date has not been announced. Residents who had gathered items for Sunday's event can use the donation sites listed above in the meantime.
