Summit's Hilltoppers look to bounce back from a shutout loss when Edison visits Investors Bank Stadium at Tatlock Field on Thursday, Sept. 24, for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

The game is only the second-ever meeting between the two programs. Edison won the first, 20-17, during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, according to CJ Sports Radio.

Both teams enter with losing records but recent momentum shifts. Summit (2-2) is coming off a 29-0 loss at Cranford on Friday, Sept. 18, when Cougars quarterback Aidan Capizzi threw for 271 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing score. Before that, the Hilltoppers had won two of their first three, including a 13-6 victory over Carteret in which senior Gavin Schnall piled up 155 yards from scrimmage and nine tackles, according to TAPinto.

Edison (1-3) opened 0-3 with losses to Union (35-0), Woodbridge (14-8) and Sayreville (41-6). Then Week 4 changed everything. The Eagles beat North Brunswick 34-24 behind senior Shaun Garland, who scored four touchdowns: three rushing, on runs of 1, 7 and 18 yards, plus a 33-yard interception return.

NJ.com recognized Garland among the Big Central Conference's Defensive Players of the Week. He has 19 tackles and an interception this season and 129 career tackles.

Edison, coached by Matt Yascko, leans heavily on the ground game. Senior Michael Florentino leads the Eagles with 245 yards on 53 carries. Senior quarterback Ryan Toth, who transferred from Metuchen before the 2025 season, has attempted just 41 passes through four games. The Eagles have not recorded a receiving touchdown all year.

For Summit, senior Matt McKeever has been a two-way factor at quarterback and linebacker. He scored on a 71-yard run in the Hilltoppers' Week 2 loss to Rahway. In last year's meeting with Cranford, McKeever rushed for two touchdowns and recorded 11 tackles in a 24-19 Summit win, NJ.com reported.

The Hilltoppers entered the season ranked No. 9 in CJ Sports Radio's preseason Top Ten after going 9-3 and reaching the North 2, Group 3 final in 2025. They compete in the Big Central Conference's United Gold Division alongside Carteret, Cranford and Scotch Plains-Fanwood.

Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Tatlock Field, with CJ Sports Radio carrying the broadcast starting at 6:15 p.m. Summit's next division opponent is Scotch Plains-Fanwood, though the date for that game has not been announced.
