Students as young as 8 will model garments they designed and sewed themselves at a fashion show in New Providence on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Sew Dandelions, a sewing and fashion design studio at 309 South Street, is staging the event. Called "Threads of Chaos," the runway show features original work by students ages 8 to 14 who spent the summer creating collections in the studio's programs. The pieces include garments, accessories, headpieces, jewelry and wearable art, according to a Patch calendar listing posted by studio founder Dominique Kurzawa-Howe.

The young designers explored themes including Marie Antoinette at Versailles, Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto, 1980s art and fashion, underwater worlds and French confectionery. Each student interpreted the themes independently, Kurzawa-Howe wrote in the listing.

Kurzawa-Howe, a Parsons School of Design graduate who received the school's Golden Thimble Award in 1998, opened Sew Dandelions at the South Street location in New Providence's Murray Hill section. Her mission: make fashion and textile arts accessible locally. The studio has welcomed hundreds of students through classes, camps, workshops and private lessons since opening, TAPinto New Providence reported in June.

"What started as a dream has become a creative home for so many people," Kurzawa-Howe said in June, when TAPinto profiled the studio's one-year anniversary. "We've watched students sew for the first time, launch fashion collections, gain confidence, and discover talents they never knew they had."

Jason Gioia, also known as DJ Metal Minds, and THORO Entertainment will provide runway music and transitions for the show. A professional photographer will be on hand.

Doors open at 3:30 p.m. The runway show begins at 4 p.m. The studio is at 309 South Street in New Providence.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3 to 16. Children under 3 get in free. Advance tickets are recommended because seating is limited, and they are available at sewdandelions.com.
