New Providence beat Metuchen 34-3 at home on Saturday, Sept. 19, as senior quarterback Kevin Reilly threw two touchdown passes and the Pioneers' defense held the visitors to a single field goal.
The Pioneers improved to 3-0. The unbeaten start comes under first-year head coach Anthony Conzentino, who replaced Chet Parlavecchio Jr. after last season's 10-1 campaign that reached a sectional championship game.
Reilly finished 6-for-9 passing for 119 yards and two touchdowns, according to NJ.com. He added 76 rushing yards on eight carries for 195 total yards on the afternoon.
New Providence scored on its first possession when Caleb Gordon punched in a 2-yard touchdown run, and the Pioneers never looked back. Reilly connected with Bowen Killea on a 16-yard scoring strike in the first quarter and found Quentin Moore for a 37-yard touchdown on a post pattern before halftime, building a 27-3 lead at the break, according to TAPinto New Providence.
Charlie Maneely did the heavy lifting on the ground, carrying 15 times for 75 yards and two short touchdown runs. Moore led the receivers with three catches for 84 yards, while Killea added two receptions for 30 yards. On defense, Chris Danysh grabbed an interception to stall a Metuchen (1-2) drive. William Hobbs converted four of five extra-point attempts.
After the season-opening 27-7 win over Voorhees on Sept. 4, Reilly told TAPinto he felt his role expanding in the new offense. "I think I'm more of a leader now," he said after that opener. "I think I have a bigger role this year than I did last year."
New Providence travels to Roselle on Friday, Sept. 25.
