Summit's secure ballot drop box has moved to the Summit Community Center at 100 Morris Ave. for the Nov. 3 general election.

Union County Board of Elections Administrator Nicole DiRado announced the change Sept. 17, one day before all 24 of the county's secure ballot drop boxes open Friday, Sept. 18. The Summit box will be available 24 hours a day from that date through 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The move affects mail-in ballot returns.

The county's announcement did not identify the previous Summit drop box location but noted Summit is one of two Union County sites that changed since the last general election. The other is in Hillside, where the drop box moved to Conant Park at 320 Conant St.

Every drop box in the county is monitored by camera surveillance and is ADA accessible, according to the announcement.

Postal delays and vote-by-mail

DiRado encouraged voters who want to avoid potential postal delays to use a drop box rather than mail their ballots through the post office.

Existing vote-by-mail procedures remain in place for the November election following a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling, according to the county announcement. Patch reported Sept. 17 that the court rejected the Trump administration's push to implement mail-in ballot restrictions for 2026 elections, with the majority finding the effort is likely to lose in court.

Other ways to vote

Voters who prefer to cast ballots in person can use early voting, which runs from Saturday, Oct. 24, through Sunday, Nov. 1, at designated locations across Union County. Election Day polling places open Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The county also encouraged voters to bring their sample ballots to the polling location for a faster check-in process.

The Summit Common Council meets next Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 512 Springfield Ave.
