Nine Summit restaurants and shops are offering free food, discounts and deals to anyone who flashes a Summit Free Public Library card through Sept. 30.
The library announced the promotion as part of Library Card Sign-Up Month, a national campaign the American Library Association has run every September since 1987. Cardholders show their library card at the register to claim each deal.
The participating businesses and their offers:
- The Broadway Diner, 55 River Rd.: one free cup of coffee or one free cake pop
- Doria's Pizza & Restaurant, 432 Springfield Ave.: 10% off
- Fiorino Ristorante & Bar, 38 Maple St.: 10% off
- Marigolds Cafe, 426 Springfield Ave.: one free treat with an order over $10
- The Red Balloon, 386 Springfield Ave.: 10% off
- Sweet Nothings, 26 Beechwood Rd.: 15% off purchases of $15 or more (exceptions apply; cannot be combined with other offers)
- SQR Pizza, 35 Union Pl.: 10% off
- Towne Delicatessen, 810 Old Springfield Ave.: one free Half & Half
- Village Trattoria, 103–105 Summit Ave.: 10% off
Four of the nine businesses sit on Springfield Avenue, Summit's main commercial strip.
Library Director Amy Behr-Shields wrote in her September letter to patrons that the library is expanding its reach this fall. Summit cardholders can now borrow from more than three million items through a new membership with the Main Library Alliance, she said. Items not available locally can be requested from another library and delivered for pickup.
"As students and families settle into a new school year, the Library is here to help make the transition easier," Behr-Shields wrote.
Library cards are available to Summit residents, employees, students and property owners. Paid memberships are also available. The library advises cardholders to check with each business for additional details on the offers.
