Summit Public Schools students head back to class Tuesday, Sept. 8, kicking off a 180-day school year that runs through Wednesday, June 16, 2027.

The Board of Education-approved calendar, which passed Oct. 9, 2025, sets 180 instructional days for students and 184 days for staff. The final day for students is a single-session Wednesday; staff wrap up Wednesday, June 17.

Summit's start date falls six days after Madison Public Schools, which opens Sept. 2. Staff development days on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and Thursday, Sept. 3, precede the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 7.

Snow day policy

The district built four emergency closing days into the calendar. If Summit uses more than four, makeup days begin Monday, March 22, 2027, and work forward as determined by the Board. That date is the first day of Spring Break (March 22-26), meaning a heavy snow year could eat into families' vacation plans.

Key dates through winter

  • Monday, Sept. 21 — Yom Kippur, schools closed
  • Monday, Oct. 12 — Single session, all grades (staff professional development)
  • Thursday-Thursday, Nov. 5-6 — NJEA Convention, schools closed
  • Wednesday, Nov. 25 — Single session, district closed in the afternoon
  • Thursday-Thursday, Nov. 26-27 — Thanksgiving recess
  • Dec. 24 through Jan. 4 — Winter recess
  • Monday, Jan. 18 — Martin Luther King Jr. Day, schools closed
  • Monday, Feb. 15 — Presidents' Day, schools closed
