Scotch Plains-Fanwood senior forward Jack Tse scored all three goals Friday, Sept. 4, handing New Providence a 3-0 shutout loss in the Pioneers' season opener at New Providence High School.

Tse put two in the net during the first half and added a third after halftime to complete the hat trick in the UCC Watchung division matchup. Colin Kochanowicz, Ryan Levine and Cain Lambert each recorded an assist for the Raiders, who improved to 2-0 and entered the week ranked No. 12 in the NJ.com Top 20.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Ewan Huerfano made three saves to preserve the shutout.

New Providence was held scoreless and could not break through against the Raiders' defense in its first game of the fall.

The performance earned Tse the Union County Conference boys soccer Player of the Week honor for the week ending Monday, Sept. 7, according to NJ.com, which announced the selection Wednesday, Sept. 9. Tse was also nominated for Sports Illustrated's national high school Athlete of the Week for the period ending Saturday, Sept. 5, putting the local standout on a national stage.

New Providence entered the season facing a significant rebuild. The Pioneers graduated 17 seniors last spring, including their top scorers, and planned to spread scoring responsibilities among returning captains and younger talent, according to a preseason preview. Head coach Chris Calveley's squad opened with the tough draw against a ranked Scotch Plains-Fanwood team.

The Pioneers stood at 0-2 heading into Thursday, Sept. 10, after they were also scheduled to host Governor Livingston on Tuesday, Sept. 8. New Providence played at Union Catholic at 4 p.m. Thursday. Scotch Plains-Fanwood was set to host Westfield on Sept. 8.
