The Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad is hosting a blood drive Thursday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its station, 378 Snyder Ave., as the region's blood supply sits at dangerously low levels.

The New York Blood Center declared an "unprecedented second blood emergency of the summer" on July 8, citing extreme weather, disrupted routines and low national inventories. New Jersey's regional supply dropped to just two days' worth before the Fourth of July — well below the usual five-to-seven-day cushion — after more than 3,000 fewer donations came in due to heatwaves, storms and power outages. Donors with O-type blood are especially needed.

The whole process takes about an hour, and one pint can save up to three lives. Donors this month get a free Red Cross knit beanie and refreshments. Book an appointment at redcrossblood.org (zip code 07922) or call 1-800-733-2767.

The all-volunteer rescue squad provides 24-hour service to Berkeley Heights and backup support to New Providence and Long Hill Township, and never charges for ambulance rides or medical supplies. More than 60% of New Jersey residents are eligible to donate blood, but only 3.6% actually do.

Afterward, organizers suggest stopping by The Feast at Mt. Carmel to "replenish your blood sugar" — a nearby event happening the same day.
