New Providence High School football enters the 2026 season ranked in the Big Central Conference's Top 5, according to Central Jersey Sports Radio's preseason power rankings published Tuesday, Aug. 25.

The Pioneers also sit 48th statewide in New Jersey's Strength Index-based power ratings, per the same rankings. That's a strong starting position.

Phillipsburg and Bridgewater-Raritan hold the top two spots in the conference rankings. New Providence's exact position within the Top 5 was not specified.

What the Strength Index measures

The NJSIAA's Strength Index differs from the power-point system used in other New Jersey high school sports. Power points reset each season. The Strength Index carries over year to year.

Before each season, the NJSIAA centers every team's number by one-third around 60, the system's theoretical midpoint. A team that finished at 90 opens the next year at 80. A team below 60 gets pulled upward by the same fraction.

Starting this season, NJ.com serves as the NJSIAA's official calculator, replacing Gridiron New Jersey, which had compiled the figures since 2002 before shutting down in June 2026. The index updates weekly and feeds into the NJSIAA's playoff seeding formula, according to Community News.

New division, new opponents

New Providence competes in the Patriot Silver Division of the Big Central Conference for 2026 and 2027 after a conference-wide reshuffling of alignments. Perth Amboy and Spotswood join the Pioneers' division as new opponents, according to a Patch report from July.

Summit, meanwhile, opens the season ranked No. 9 in Central Jersey Sports Radio's preseason Top Ten after going 9-3 in 2025 and reaching the North 2, Group 3 sectional final.
