Five days after a severe storm knocked out power to more than 530 Chatham Borough customers, only 64 homes and businesses remained without electricity Wednesday morning, July 8.

JCP&L planned to restore 31 customers Wednesday and another 52 Thursday, with all remaining repairs targeted for completion by 11:30 p.m. Thursday, officials said. Crews are finishing work on three damaged electrical circuits.

The July 3 storm brought wind gusts of up to 60 mph, downing trees and wires across the area and forcing Chatham Borough to cancel its July 4 parade, flag raising and fireworks because of safety concerns.

Officials credited JCP&L, the Department of Public Works and emergency crews — including additional workers brought in from outside the region — for clearing roads and restoring service.

Residents should avoid all downed wires and report hazards to the Chatham Township Police Department’s non-emergency line at 973-377-0100. The Library of the Chathams, 214 Main St., remains available as a cooling and charging center for residents still without power.
