Summit families looking for a summer adventure that goes beyond the usual camp routine can now sign up for a week of outdoor exploration, wildlife encounters and hands-on activities designed for teens and young adults with disabilities.

Union County opened registration Monday, July 6, for its 2026 Sensory Friendly Summer Camp at the Trailside Nature & Science Center in the Watchung Reservation. The free program runs Monday, Aug. 17, through Friday, Aug. 21, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The camp is open to Union County residents ages 12 to 21 with documented disabilities — including Summit families.

Campers will spend the week outside taking part in:

  • Guided nature walks and scavenger hunts
  • Interactive games and crafts
  • Storytelling and sensory activities
  • Live animal encounters

Activities are designed to engage multiple senses, including sight, sound, smell and touch. Campers can also explore the reservation’s Sensory Friendly Trail, an accessible 0.3-mile loop featuring Braille guides, audio kiosks, sensory gardens and musical play areas.

Union County officials said the goal is to give participants a chance to connect with nature while building confidence and community.

Who can apply

The camp is designed for Union County residents ages 12-16 and 17-21 with documented disabilities. Participants must be able to independently manage toileting and feeding, though campers who need occasional reminders or redirection are welcome.

Space is limited, and families must complete an application and interview process. The camp does not provide one-on-one staffing.

Families can apply here. The county has not announced a deadline, but placement is not guaranteed.
