Three masked men grabbed about $3,200 in clothing from a Springfield Avenue store and fled on Monday, June 29, according to the Summit Police Department's latest activity blotter covering June 22 through July 5.

The grab-and-run was one of eight incidents logged during the two-week stretch, which also included a DUI crash into a utility pole and an arrest tied to a multi-state vehicle theft investigation.

Two Infiniti Q50 sedans — a 2022 and a 2023 model — were stolen from a local dealership overnight Sunday into Monday, June 22. The theft was reported to police on Wednesday, June 24, at approximately 10:17 a.m.

Detectives tracked one vehicle's GPS signal and recovered it in Linden, New Jersey. The second was found in Queens, New York, with assistance from the NYPD, New York State Police, and Linden Police Department.

Nelson Clermont, 21, of Montclair, was charged with conspiracy to commit theft of a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, theft of a motor vehicle, and receiving a stolen motor vehicle. All four are third-degree offenses. He voluntarily surrendered to Summit police on Tuesday, June 30, and was transported to the Union County Jail pending his first court appearance.

Chief Ryan Peters credited the Detective Bureau's investigative work for the rapid recovery of both vehicles and the swift identification of a suspect, according to Summit police.

The investigation remains active, and additional arrests or charges may follow.

On Sunday, July 5, officers responded to the sound of a crash near Broad Street and Springfield Avenue and found a vehicle against a utility pole. A 24-year-old New Providence man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. No injury information was released.
