Another round of thunderstorms could bring heavy rain, damaging winds and flash flooding to the Summit area Thursday through Saturday, as communities continue cleaning up from last week’s powerful storm.

The National Weather Service issued a marginal severe weather outlook for Thursday, July 10, with another round possible Friday, July 11. Scattered storms may linger into Saturday before drier conditions return Sunday.

The timing comes as hundreds of residents across northern New Jersey are still waiting for power restoration after the July 3 storm, which knocked out electricity for 325,000 customers statewide.

Berkeley Heights reported 445 customers without power Tuesday, July 8, while Chatham Township had about 500 households still affected. Officials warned that additional storms could complicate recovery efforts.

Several roads remain closed because of downed trees and wires, and residents are reminded to stay at least 30 feet away from fallen lines and treat all wires as energized.

Cooling and charging centers remain available at:

  • Berkeley Heights Fire Department, Hamilton Avenue
  • Library of The Chathams, 214 Main St.
  • Senior Center of The Chathams, 58 Meyersville Road
  • Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township, 240 Southern Blvd.

Officials also reminded residents to operate generators outdoors only and at least 20 feet away from homes.
