BERKELEY HEIGHTS — Mountain Avenue is getting a fresh layer of pavement — again — after last summer’s road work failed quality tests and forced a redo.
New Jersey American Water’s contractor, Asphalt Restoration Enterprise, began corrective paving this week after most pavement samples from the utility’s previous project were found to be unsatisfactory. Union County scheduled the repairs to help Berkeley Heights address the issue.
The final full closure is expected Thursday, July 9, at the Mountain Avenue and Plainfield Avenue intersection as crews complete paving in that area.
Work began Tuesday, July 7, after weather delayed the original start date. Crews are working from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Tuesday, July 14. Residents along Mountain Avenue will still have driveway access.
As of Wednesday afternoon, crews had finished paving through Deep Dale Drive and reopened sections between Park Avenue and Cedar Green.
The contractor notified 438 residents on Mountain Avenue and nearby streets ahead of the project. The township said it did not send a separate notice because staff were also responding to a severe weather emergency that left more than 100 homes without power during a heat wave.
The township expects all paving work to be completed by Tuesday, July 14. Drivers should follow posted detours and expect delays while construction continues.
