A new bagel rivalry is brewing just a few train stops from Summit.

PopUp Bagels opened its first New Jersey location July 11 at 220 South Ave. W. in Westfield, taking over the former Westfield Seafood space just steps from the NJ Transit station.

The fast-growing chain has a simple formula: five bagel flavors, no sandwiches, no toasting and no slicing. Instead, customers tear into hot bagels by hand and pair them with whipped schmears — a concept the company calls "Grip, Rip and Dip."

"Our focus is on simplicity and freshness, serving hot, whole bagels straight from the oven," spokesperson Leah Kuhn told Patch.

Founded in 2021 by Tenafly native Adam Goldberg, PopUp Bagels has expanded to 45 locations across 18 states. The company plans to open 25 locations in New Jersey, with a second confirmed in Tenafly.

The Westfield grand opening drew long lines, a DJ and a limited-edition tiramisu schmear made with Carlo's Bakery.

For Summit residents curious about the hype, Westfield is currently the closest place to try it.
