Summit police recovered two stolen Infiniti sedans and arrested a 21-year-old Montclair man in connection with their theft from a local dealership, the department announced Wednesday, July 2.

Nelson Clermont faces four third-degree charges: conspiracy to commit theft of a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, theft of a motor vehicle, and receiving a stolen motor vehicle, according to the Summit Police Department news release.

A 2022 Infiniti Q50 and a 2023 Infiniti Q50 were taken from the dealership during the night of Sunday, June 22. Staff reported the vehicles missing on Wednesday, June 24, at approximately 10:17 a.m.

Detectives from the Summit Police Department Detective Bureau tracked the first vehicle to Queens, New York, where it was recovered. The second vehicle's GPS transmitter placed it in Linden, New Jersey, where detectives and patrol officers located and recovered it without incident.

Police Chief Ryan Peters credited the Detective Bureau's investigative work for the quick recovery, along with assistance from the New York State Police, New York City Police Department, and Linden Police Department.

Clermont voluntarily surrendered to the Summit Police Department on Monday, June 30, was processed on the charges and transported to the Union County Jail pending his first appearance in Superior Court. No court date has been announced.

The investigation remains active, and the department said it has not ruled out additional arrests. As with all criminal matters, Clermont is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

The arrest comes amid a documented increase in motor vehicle crimes across the region. In a January 13 advisory, the Summit Police Department warned that the area had seen a rise in vehicle thefts, vehicle break-ins, and home burglaries in which suspects entered residences searching for key fobs. The department said it was deploying additional resources to areas of concern and sharing information with regional law enforcement partners.

Other vehicle-related incidents this year include an attempted theft on Canoe Brook Parkway on Friday, April 24, captured on a Ring camera, and a vehicle break-in on Oak Ridge Avenue on Sunday, January 18.
