Summit landed the No. 3 spot on HGTV's new ranking of America's 20 best suburbs for people leaving city life behind.

The list, published Monday, Sept. 14, placed the Union County town behind only Chappaqua, NY, at No. 1 and Larchmont, NY, at No. 2. All six of the top spots went to suburbs in the New York City orbit, spanning New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

That puts Summit in rare company nationally.

HGTV worked with Suburban Jungle, a real estate advisory firm, to compile the rankings. The firm described Summit as a longtime draw for city dwellers who want more space but refuse to give up walkability, strong schools or neighborhood character. Summit sits less than an hour from Manhattan by train, a commute that has helped fuel two decades of steady growth, according to Suburban Jungle.

"This Union County suburb has long been a favorite for city dwellers seeking a little breathing room – but not at the expense of culture, coffee, or community," Suburban Jungle said in the New York Post's report on the list.

The firm added that Summit's walkable downtown, top-rated schools and tree-lined streets top countless city families' wish lists, with many starting to plan a move as soon as they visit.

The HGTV nod is the second national accolade for Summit in recent months. A separate July analysis by radio station 94.3 The Point ranked Summit the second-wealthiest suburb in the country, according to Patch, with average household income topping $306,000 and typical home prices around $1.45 million.

No reaction from Summit town officials had been published as of Tuesday, Sept. 15. The full HGTV list covers 20 suburbs across the country, with the NYC region claiming the top six positions.
