Basketball players in grades 4 through 6 can try out for the Summit Area YMCA's travel teams on Thursday, Oct. 15 and Saturday, Oct. 17.

Both sessions take place at the Summit YMCA. Two 12-and-under divisions are open: 12U Girls and 12U Boys.

The 12U Girls tryout runs from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. on Oct. 15 and from 2 to 3:15 p.m. on Oct. 17, according to the YMCA's tryout announcement. Boys tryout times have not been posted. Families should check the YMCA's basketball programs page for the full boys schedule.

Coaches Toni Harrell and Kareem Douglas will run both sessions. Players will go through drills and game-style play, with coaches assessing dribbling, passing, shooting and footwork, the YMCA said. Effort, attitude and how players support teammates also factor into evaluations.

Registration is open at thesay.org.

The travel program is one piece of the YMCA's basketball lineup heading into fall and winter. The organization also offers a Youth Basketball League for kindergarten through third grade, with weekend games at the Summit YMCA for grades K through 1 and at the Berkeley Heights YMCA for grades 2 and 3. League players get free open gym time to practice between games.

For older players looking to sharpen specific skills, the YMCA runs Advanced Basketball clinics at two locations. Clinics for ages 10 through 13 meet at the Berkeley Heights YMCA, while clinics for ages 6 and 7 are held at the Summit YMCA.

The YMCA has not announced a season start date or roster timeline for the travel teams. Tryout registration and program details are available at thesay.org.
