New Providence will receive $1 million in county grant funding to renovate and expand its police headquarters, the borough announced Thursday, Oct. 8.

The grant comes from the Union County Improvement Authority's 2026 Capital Project Grant Program, a $10 million fund for infrastructure projects across Union County municipalities. New Providence's share requires no local taxpayer match.

The money will go toward the New Providence Police Department Public Safety Building Addition and Renovation, a project already underway. The department temporarily relocated to 1 Academy Street on Aug. 27 as construction began on the long-term facility, as first reported by News 12 New Jersey. Borough officials expect the completed building to be ready by fall 2028.

Academy Street became one-way southbound on Sept. 1 after the borough adjusted traffic patterns around the temporary headquarters, according to Patch. That change was adopted by Mayor and Council ordinance.

In its announcement, the borough described the grant as an investment in public safety and the future of New Providence. The planned improvements, borough officials said, will give officers a more modern and functional facility.

The borough thanked the Union County Improvement Authority and the Union County Board of County Commissioners for supporting the project. Officials also credited New Jersey Senate President Nick Scutari, who represents District 22, for helping secure state funding that made the countywide grant program possible.

The police department remains fully operational at its temporary headquarters at 1 Academy Street during construction.
