Governor Livingston High School's 55th Annual Pageant of Champions brings marching bands from across the region to Berkeley Heights on Sunday, Oct. 18.
Doors open at 12:30 p.m. at the school's campus, 175 Watchung Blvd. Performances begin at 1 p.m., according to TAPinto Berkeley Heights. The Highlanders' own marching band takes the field for a judged exhibition at 3:30 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony at 4 p.m.
The school's Highlander Chili, a longtime fixture of the event, will be available alongside other food and community activities.
The Pageant has been a fall tradition at Governor Livingston for more than five decades. The 50th anniversary edition in 2021 drew 13 bands. Seven bands competed at the 52nd edition in October 2023, when the Highlanders scored a 90.2 in their judged exhibition, their highest mark that season. Band Director Nicholas O'Sullivan led the 2023 performance.
The Highlanders enter the Oct. 18 showcase on a strong run. At the 73rd annual NATO Parade of Nations in Norfolk, Virginia, on April 18, the band earned the only Gold Rating awarded to a parade band, according to TAPinto. The parade featured 79 units from around the world, including 12 high school bands. The Highlanders also won Best Marching, Best Music and Overall Grand Champion. It was the band's first appearance in the parade since 2009.
Marching Band Club Advisor Josef Ellis, who traveled with the band to Norfolk, told TAPinto in May that the experience gave students a chance to hear "different styles of music from different cultures."
Governor Livingston also competed at Madison High School's Tournament of Bands on Sunday, Oct. 4, one of 14 visiting bands at that event.
The Berkeley Heights Public Schools district announced the Pageant of Champions on its X account on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Admission details and a full list of competing bands had not been published as of Wednesday, Oct. 7.
