The New Providence Police Department has moved its operations to 1 Academy Street, the former Borough Hall, while construction of a new police headquarters gets underway.

The borough announced the relocation Monday, Aug. 24, and said the department will operate from the temporary location for approximately two years. The new headquarters is expected to be completed in fall 2028.

Residents who need to visit the police department in person should use the Academy Street entrance at 1 Academy Street. Phone numbers have not changed. Call 911 for emergencies and 908-665-1111 for non-emergency matters.

The borough said the move allows the department to maintain uninterrupted operations during construction. Officials described the new facility as a significant investment in public safety infrastructure but did not disclose a project cost.

Police Chief Donald Sretenovic, who was appointed July 14 after the retirement of Chief Daniel Henn, will lead the department through the transition. Sretenovic has served with the department since 2002, starting as a dispatcher before becoming a patrol officer in December 2003.

The borough said it will provide updates on the construction project and any changes to public access as work progresses. Residents can reach the department at 908-665-1111 for non-emergency matters.
