New Providence residents who bought leaf vacuuming permits face uncertainty after the borough suspended the program Monday, Oct. 5.

The borough stopped all leaf vacuuming and halted new permit sales, according to a notice on its website. Officials are working through unspecified requirements with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Union County.

The borough did not detail what triggered the compliance issue or provide a timeline for resolution. No borough official was named as a contact.

Residents who already purchased a 2026 permit will receive a refund if the program is canceled entirely, the borough said. It described the halt as a temporary step while it ensures the program meets all applicable requirements.

Regular Monday curbside collection of bagged and canned leaves is not affected. The suspension applies only to the vacuuming permit program.
