The Summit Common Council introduced a parking ordinance change on Beekman Road to ease restrictions for school drop-off and pick-up. The measure was one of four ordinances introduced at the council's Tuesday, Oct. 6, meeting.
The council also introduced an amendment to the organizational structure of the Department of Community Services (DCS). That change follows the city's hiring of Ray Sullivan as the new DCS director. Council President Claire Toth noted in a third-quarter update published Oct. 7 that Sullivan "has hit the ground running and is moving forward on several fronts."
Two additional ordinances were introduced, but the city's meeting highlights did not identify them. All four require a public hearing and second vote before adoption.
The council passed several resolutions, including authorization of bid advertisements for two projects, a formal vacancy declaration in the Division of Public Works and new appointments to a city committee. The city did not specify the projects, the position or the committee members in its published summary.
Mayor Elizabeth Fagan opened the meeting with two proclamations. She recognized the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad for First Aid Squad Month and presented a Fire Prevention Week proclamation to Fire Chief Brian Harnois and Battalion Chief Matt Lemons.
Fire Prevention Week runs Sunday, Oct. 4, through Saturday, Oct. 10. In an Oct. 1 city announcement, Harnois said, "Making small, smart choices when we charge our devices can make a big difference when it comes to fire safety."
This year's theme is "Safe Charging is a Superpower," focused on reducing the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.
Summit High School junior Madeleine Robb also addressed the council with a presentation on breast cancer awareness.
Toth's quarterly update highlighted other recent council actions, including passage of a Film Ready ordinance, new stop signs near schools, a resolution supporting a proposed state law to reduce speed limits near schools and downtown, and a new sidewalk on Kent Place Boulevard west of Passaic Avenue.
City offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 12, for a parking holiday. Trash and recycling pickup will not change that day.
Residents can weigh in at a Council Listening Session on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Summit Community Center, 100 Morris Ave. Mayor Fagan and council members will attend. The next regular Common Council meeting is Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 512 Springfield Ave. The full Oct. 6 meeting is available on the City of Summit YouTube channel.
