Summit's Division of Public Works will begin picking up storm debris from the July 3 storm starting the week of Monday, July 13, giving residents a one-time curbside brush collection after nearly two weeks of cleanup.

The city announced the program on Wednesday, July 9. Residents must place brush at the curb on their regular garbage collection day, but the city warned that crews may not reach every street on schedule given the volume of downed trees and limbs left by the storm.

"If your brush is not collected on your garbage day, please be patient," the city's Division of Public Works said in its alert.

What will and won't be collected

The rules are specific. Crews will pick up loose brush, branches, and logs that are no larger than 6 inches in diameter and no longer than 10 feet. Anything bigger stays behind.

Items the city will not collect:

  • Branches or logs exceeding 6 inches in diameter or 10 feet in length
  • Debris from lawn care contractors
  • Grass, leaves, or rocks
  • Brush placed in leaf bags

All brush must be left loose at the curb. Bagged material will be skipped.

The announcement does not specify how long the collection will run, whether there will be a second pass, or a program end date. Residents whose brush is not picked up on their scheduled day have no stated deadline for when crews will return.

The city has warned residents not to approach trees or branches touching downed power lines. All downed wires should be treated as energized. Residents should stay at least 30 feet away from any downed or low-hanging line.

To report storm-related issues, residents can use SeeClickFix or call 911 for emergencies involving downed power lines.
