Summit residents looking to declutter or furnish a room for free have their full 2026 calendar: the city has posted this year's complete Summit Free Market schedule, with several fall date changes worth noting.
The Free Market operates twice a month at the Municipal Transfer Station, 40 New Providence Ave. Saturday events run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Friday events run from noon to 2 p.m. No appointment is needed.
Since launching in 2008, the student-led, volunteer-run program has served more than 6,000 residents and kept over 175 tons of reusable goods out of the waste stream, according to the city.
What's different this fall
The general pattern is second Saturdays and fourth Fridays. But three exceptions apply later this year:
- September: The Friday event moves to Sept. 25 instead of its usual fourth-Friday slot.
- November: The Friday event moves to Nov. 20.
- December: No Friday event at all. Only the Saturday, Dec. 12 market will be held.
The next upcoming dates are Friday, Aug. 28 (noon–2 p.m.), Saturday, Sept. 19 (8 a.m.–3 p.m.) and Friday, Sept. 25 (noon–2 p.m.).
Rules to know before you go
A Summit resident Transfer Station permit is required to enter the facility. Permits can be purchased online through the city's Parking Services page. Visitors are limited to 60 minutes per event to keep access fair for everyone.
Donations must be yard-sale quality, sorted — no unsorted boxes or bags. Certain items, including textiles and books, are restricted; the city asks residents to check its donation guidelines before loading the car. Resale of items picked up at the market is not permitted.
High school students interested in volunteering can sign up through the program, which is entirely student-run, according to Summit Verve, the student newspaper at Summit High School.
