Summit will hold a public memorial on Friday, Sept. 11, marking a quarter century since the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.
The ceremony begins at 9:45 a.m. at fire headquarters, 281 Broad Street, according to a city announcement. Mayor Elizabeth Fagan and first responders will deliver remarks at a brief gathering, followed by the annual bell ringing ceremony. All community members are invited.
The 25th anniversary observance continues a tradition Summit has maintained for years at the same location and time. The city promoted its 2023 ceremony on social media that September, encouraging all residents to attend the annual service at fire headquarters in memory of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
This year's ceremony will be the first 9/11 observance under new Fire Chief Brian Harnois, who was sworn in by Mayor Fagan at a Common Council meeting on July 7. Harnois replaced Eric Evers, who retired after 38 years of service, as Union News Daily reported. Mayor Fagan praised Harnois in July for managing more than 150 emergency calls in four days during severe storms his first weekend on the job, including a structure fire in Summit.
